For many retailers the 'Summer Season' is the most critical trade period - here's a few tips to make the most of it.
A successful season starts well ahead of time. Quieter periods are opportunities to review ranges, update designs, meet with suppliers and see what they can add to your business. Consider staff training and analyse what you can do better. Don't forget to take a break and recharge yourself, and your team so that everyone is ready.
Make Your Space Work
Every spot in your store is precious, and expensive - so make it work. Is there a display or two that isn't worth having? Where are your dead spots - would something else work better there? Unclutter your store in preparation for more stock and customers. Make sure everything is clean and your layout and signage are fresh.
Being overstocked is a worry, but being out of stock is twice as bad - it's a fine balance but make sure you have good cover in your key categories and best sellers. Be aware of supplier lead times and any holiday closures that might affect their deliveries.
Can your people and procedures deal with the pressure? There's no greater challenge to your customer service standards than the intensity of peak season. 70% of how a customer feels about a transaction is how they think they have been treated. So be ready to roll out the red carpet - especially when there's lots of customers ready to walk it!
Seek out products that are different from what you've had before, and from what other stores have now. Work with your suppliers on exclusive designs, or a special offering - gift with purchase, multi buys, etc. Give customers a reason to spend more time and money with you than with your competitors.
Opening an extra hour or giving above and beyond service - your days will be busy but don't be content with a 'good' day. Make your good days GREAT - set targets, celebrate breaking records and stretch yourself.
